Stressful life Leads to Early Menopause, Says Experts

There has been a perceptible rise in the number of early menopausal cases in the city in the last couple of years, feel a section of gynecologists here who attribute it to the increasingly stressful lifestyle and obesity arising due to junk foods.

A Bhopal chapter of the Indian Menopause Society has been set up to create awareness among women on this issue.

Dr Ranbir Singh of Bhopal Test Tube Baby Centre says that early menopause is the reason behind every one out of five infertility cases. Terming highly stressful lifestyle as a prime reason for early menopause, he gave a recent example of a bureaucrat who had attained menopause at the age of 35. “Stress leads to hormone-based imbalances leading to menopause,” he said.

Says Dr Archana Tripathi of Chirayu Medical College, “Onset of early menopause can be attributed to stress, change in lifestyle and also adulteration of food. This trend has become more pronounced in the last couple of years. I come across women who experience menopause as early as 40 while the incidence is generally seen between 45-52 years of age.”

Dr Vinita Bahel of BHEL Kasturba Hospital agrees. She says, “High incidence of cancer can be seen among menopausal women these days because of erratic schedule and presence of pesticides in foods . This can be a stressful time for women as their bodies undergo hormonal changes. There is a need to make more women aware about this transitional phase.”

Obesity arising out of improper eating habits is also a prime factor. The doctors suggest a healthy diet, exercise and increased awareness of the natural phenomenon to combat with the mental stress and trauma experienced by women.
